The University of Virginia (UVa) is increasing its career services offerings for staff employees and career advising/coaching resources will be a key component of these resources.




The Career Advisor and Coach is responsible for providing career advising and professional development programming to facilitate the navigation of career opportunities across Grounds at UVa for staff employees and community members. The Advisor and Coach will work with the Career Journeys team to design and deliver effective, personalized, and innovative career development experiences and provide strategic support to the Community Connections Hub contributing to measurable and successful outcomes. Through providing one-on-one support and guidance the Career Advisor and Coach will help staff and community members communicate skills and qualifications with confidence to take the next step on their career journey at UVa.


What you'll be doing:


  • Providing a full range of career guidance activities to UVa staff and members of the local community through the Community Connections Hub, including drop-in sessions, and scheduled one-on-one career advising, workshops, experiential learning, and engagement opportunities on topics including career exploration, readiness, position and role search strategies, resume and cover letter development, networking, and interviewing skills.

  • Researching and contributing professional input to the development of digital career journeys resources, using UVa career online platforms.

  • Programming, community outreach, and building relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders including community organizations, re-entry programs, and businesses to support this work.

  • Supporting data collection, program design, facilitation, assessment, and management.


What we're looking for:


  • Our ideal candidate will have demonstrated success providing career advising, career counselling and/or career coaching services to a diverse population in a community/healthcare/higher education/human services or similar setting.

  • At least two years of relevant experience.

  • Experience of delivering services and facilitating audience sessions on a one-on-one basis as well as to small and large groups, both in-person and online.

  • Demonstrable interpersonal communication, negotiation, collaboration, and networking skills with a variety of stakeholders.

  • Excellent organizational, workload, and time management skills.

  • The ability to assess, track, and monitor program participation and effectiveness, adjusting as needed.

  • Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams, and Excel)

  • Familiarity with virtual platforms, videoconferencing, teaching, or webinar tools (e.g., Zoom, Teams, Canvas).

  • Bachelor's degree preferred. High School graduate with relevant experience will be considered in lieu of degree.


Nice to haves:


  • Experience designing career development or internal mobility programs.

  • Familiarity with re-entry and career readiness programs.

  • Demonstrated understanding of issues facing diverse groups, historically underrepresented populations and/or experience working on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion to effect meaningful change.

  • Knowledge of healthcare and/or higher education systems and structures.

This position is eligible for remote work with the understanding that some work must be conducted in-person, on site with some frequency. The hours are somewhat flexible between Monday and Friday. The selected candidates will be hired at the Career Advisor and Coach or Senior Career Advisor and Coach, depending on qualifications and experience. The selected candidates will pass a background check. These are full-time, benefited positions with UVa benefits. Employee benefits package highlights include:

The initial term for this position expires June 30, 2025 with the potential to extend depending upon project need, availability of funding, and performance. Anticipated hiring range: $65,000 - $85,000 based on qualifications. Preference will be given to applications received by November 27, 2022.
