Job Summary:

This Accountant helps Southwest deliver on our Purpose by performing financial accounting activities such as preparing and recording journal entries, financial statements, and monthly account reconciliations. This role joins the Corporate Accounting Team, where they'll routinely work with Financial Planning & Analysis, Technology, Treasury, and Corporate Accounting Teams to help analyze, monitor, and account for expense items on financial statements - including payroll and labor categories, profit-sharing, taxes, fuel, debt, insurance, healthy activity, worker's compensation, and more. They'll research and analyze financial data and communicate with Finance Leaders. This role also prepares documentation and analytics to validate and support internal and external financial reporting. This role is a hybrid position based out of our Corporate Campus in Dallas, TX, which requires Employees to work onsite on our Corporate Campus at least three days a week. The Department designates the specific three days of the week Employees must work on-site.

Responsibilities
- Record entries and perform analysis to complete the financial close process with guidance and supervision
- Review accounts for discrepancies and reconcile differences
- Apply GAAP knowledge to the assigned desk task requirements
- Ensure all journal entries are made during the monthly close process by proactively tracking the journal entry assignment list to prevent escalations
- Prepare, examine, or analyze accounting records, financial statements, or other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance to reporting and procedural standards
- Analyze third party feedback and research internally to resolve disputes and correct errors
- Review accounts, records, financial statements, footnotes, and other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance to reporting and procedural standards
- Analyze, manipulate, and/or process large sets of data using statistical software
- Demonstrate consistency and accuracy to complete reconciliations with guidance/supervision to ensure compliance
- May perform other job duties as directed by Employee's Leaders
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of economic and accounting principles and practices, the financial markets, banking and the analysis and reporting of financial data
- Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, stenography and transcription, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology
- Skilled in collecting, organizing, visualizing and assimilating data including turning raw data into meaningful information using data-oriented programming languages and visualization software
- Ability to effectively communicate information and ideas using all forms of communication, learning to adjust tone, style and content to meet the audience's needs
- Ability to develop relationships and build trust with Team Members and Customers
- Ability to articulate how research and analysis was performed in preparing analytics in support of financial reporting
- Ability to create financial spreadsheets, charts and reports that contain relevant accounting and financial performance data with some supervision and guidance
- Ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense
Education
- Required: High School Diploma or GED
- Required: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance
Experience
Intermediate level experience, fully functioning broad knowledge in:
Accounting principles and practices
Financial statements and reports
Preferred: 1-2 years public accounting experience or corporate accounting experience at a Fortune 500 company
Preferred: Experience in accounting for salaries, wages, and/or benefits
Preferred: Experience / proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
Preferred: Experience with Alteryx, Tableau, SAP, and/or Blackline
Licensing/Certification
- Preferred, but not required: Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
Physical Abilities
- Ability to perform work duties from limited space workstation/desk/office area for extended periods of time
- Ability to communicate and interact with others in the English language to meet the demands of the job
- Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed and accuracy to meet the demands of the job
Other Qualifications
- Must be a U.S. citizen or have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelines
- Must maintain a well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards as described in established guidelines
- Must meet confidentiality expectations as to confidential, proprietary, and sensitive Company information
- Must have flexibility to work extended hours during the week and weekend, including Company holidays, during quarterly close or special projects
Pay & Benefits
Competitive market salary from $69,400.00 - $77,100.00 per year* depending on qualifications and experience, with opportunity for future pay increases based on performance and market movement. For eligible leadership and individual contributor roles, additional bonus opportunities are available and awarded at the discretion of the company.
