Job Summary:

For our hospital to run effectively, we need a veterinary assistant who can offer excellent vet care and outstanding customer service to patients and their owners. The main duties of the position include animal needs assessment, diagnosis through laboratory testing and examinations, assisting in surgeries, healthcare provision, nutrition and caring for patients as well as keeping medical supplies and equipment inventory up-to-date. It also involves overseeing patient checkouts and triage while maintaining accurate medical records.

Key Responsibilities:

  • The activities involved in the identification of animals needs may include comprehensive assessments, conducting interviews with pet owners, reviewing animal care plans plus records, running laboratory tests on pets samples as well as getting radio diagnostic images.
  • To fix up patients doctors take vital signs collect samples provide remedies immunizations treatment bandaging or wrapping areas that require attention.

  • Patients conditions reactions modifications of doses shall be recorded in medical documents in real time keeping updated information in database.
  • Provide updates about pets' conditions based on the veterinarian's recommendation back to the owner.
  • Preventative maintenance is a proactive approach involving performing regular checks and scheduled maintenance tasks aimed at reducing chances of breakdowns. This will comprise equipment inspection, replacing worn-out parts and cleaning the equipment according to the manufacturers instructions.
  • Replenish supplies by approving purchase orders and receipts.
  • Being ahead of the game by participating in educational opportunities and maintaining a regular reading schedule of trade periodicals is advantageous for staying current with industry advancements.
  • Following bathing, grooming, and brushing pets per owners requirements before they can be disallowed to go home.
  • Carry out both verbal and written instructions effectively when directed
  • Do other duties as assigned by Manager or practice supervisor

These can include the following responsibilities if appointed within any given specialty:

Cardiology:

  • Collect samples from patient to lab for testing

  • Use sterile equipment to clean wounds and wrap them with protective casts or bandages.
  • Deliver injections and extract blood samples.
  • There might be a need to be present on-call in the intensive care unit.

Imaging:

  • Play a part in veterinary practice as an adjunct to medical doctors applying multiple diagnostic imaging modalities such as MRI scans, CT scans, digital x-rays and ultrasound etc.

Integrative:

  • Assist veterinarians in providing comprehensive examinations for pets with cancer.

  • Educate owners on different common oncologic cancers and give detailed explanations about them.

Ophthalmology:

  • Be available to assist vets during pet eye exams.
  • Help practitioners perform diagnostic tests including Schirmer Tear Testing, Tonometry, Ocular Ultrasounds, Electroretinogram testing…

Radiology:

  • Participate with veterinary technicians and other colleagues who are involved in clinical imaging procedures that can enhance an outcome for a sick companion animal.
    Surgery
    Prepare animals before surgery through such actions as getting them ready for operation by shaving their fur off;

Qualifications:

  • GED programs often offer flexible schedules and alternative learning environments to accommodate different needs.
  • With over two years of experience, I am highly competent in dealing with veterinary appointments, surgeries and nursing care for critically ill patients.
  • The preference or requirement for a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT), Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT), Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), or Licensed Veterinary Medical Technician (LVMT) varies by state.
  • Employers are open to considering an alternative mix of education, certification, training, and experience that is equivalent.

Position Requirements:

  • Employ gentle and non-threatening movements when handling pets that are experiencing severe stress, illness or pain, to avoid causing further distress.
  • Carry out all job responsibilities with a level of maturity and professionalism.
  • The right candidate will be able to work on weekends and holidays and have a flexible schedule.
  • This strenuous line of work mandates frequent motion, cleaning, and the exertion of physical effort.
  • The duties could require prolonged keyboard input or prolonged standing and walking, depending on the department.
  • Physical activities such as climbing, balancing, or crawling may be required.
  • Moderate physical activity, like lifting and carrying animals that weigh up to 50 pounds, is required for some assignments.
  • Handle incoming calls and carry out supplementary tasks as necessary for the hospital to function effectively.
